About Me

Hello!

For those of you who don't know me I am Alison, the creative behind Button Bothy.  Button obsessed mother to a fabuIous teenage son, living in the beautiful North West Highlands of Scotland.

Beginings

Most people have some memory of “Granny’s Button Box” and for me this is where my passion for buttons started.  As a child I spent most of my time making things - anything I could find was utilised. I was very keen on art at school and went on to study sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, where I produced sculptures and installations made predominately from buttons. It was around then that my passion for buttons became an obsession! I graduated in 2002 and after spending a while longer in Edinburgh I decided to return to my birthplace in the North West Highlands. After the birth of my son I scaled down my sculpture work and focused on expanding on the jewellery I had been making with my ever-growing button collection.

Creating

Each piece of Button Bothy jewellery is handmade by myself in my studio in the Highlands of Scotland. Most days I can be found “playing” in my studio, creating new pieces from an assortment of materials, in lots of different styles. My studio doubles up as a shop for my creations and some other items I sell.

Where I live & work

I feel incredibly lucky to be able to live and work in the beautiful village of Poolewe in Wester Ross, Scotland. When I am not working, I like to spend my time with my friends and family, enjoying all our local area has to offer, not least the spectacular scenery. If you would like to know more about the area the Visit Wester Ross website is a great place to start.

What's in a name?

I am often asked what a Bothy is. For those not familiar a bothy is a basic shelter, usually left unlocked and available for anyone to use free of charge.  Bothies are most commonly found in remote mountainous areas of Scotland and make great overnight shelters on long walks in the beautiful Highland mountains. Check out the Mountain Bothies Association for more information on bothies.
